Sammi Pillows is developing a sleeping pillow for young children and was motivated to participate in the open community called OpenIDEO, an idea that, if we collaborate together on a global basis, we can come up with ideas to solve many of the world's problems. The initiative that inspired us to move forward is the Early Childhood Challenge. Here is our submission.
Sammi Therapeutic Pillow for Young Children
Thank you everyone who gave me a "Heart" and otherwise cheered me on and supported me with extremely helpful guidance to improve my Open Submission for the Sammi Early Childhood Pillow! There were over 600 Open Submissions worldwide for this fantastic competition. Unfortunately, we were not selected to advance to the next round for consideration to receive one of the top prizes. However, my Sammi Team and I learned so much in the process. Thank you again!!
Getting good sleep is like an immunization against disease. "It's almost like another vaccine we can give our kids to help them fight off illness and promote physical well-being," according to Cora Breuer, MD, of the American Academy of Pediatrics. But healthy sleeping by young children is often neglected or misunderstood by their parents or caregivers. Healthy sleeping is sleeping well and up to 71% of a young child’s life should be sleeping well but many don’t. The consequences could be severe with behavioral and cognitive development problems that can lead to poor academic skills. It also can affect health, including hyperactivity and obesity. Moreover, they are worse for low-income preschool children.
We want to do something about it. Our idea is to develop an early childhood pillow (EC Pillow) to help young children 1 to 3 years of age sleep better. Our proposal is to gather data with AI and sensors to monitor a young child's quality of sleep and napping. From this data and what we know about adult pillows, we will create an EC Pillow that offers a sleep solution for young children to prevent or address positional sleeping problems. At Sammi Sleeping Systems LLC, a sleep technology company, we know that everyone needs a pillow with an internal structure to properly support the cervical neck, align the natural curvature of the spine, and maintain a cool head while sleeping. Right now, most adults complain about the inability to get good sleep with their pillows but many don't know why. So, why should we expect them to know which pillow is best for young children?
Making the EC Pillow available with the launch of an educational campaign will empower parents and caregivers to do something now to improve the sleeping habits of their young children. The goal is for young children who use our EC Pillow to sleep or nap longer, more comfortably, and with sleep problems such as snoring, mild sleep apnea or neck pain reduced if not averted. When awaken, they will be refreshed, more alert and ready to learn. If we can intervene by developing a safe and effective pillow for young children and improve good sleep literacy for their parents and caregivers, we can improve the quality of young children’s lives.
